Helping Nature, as we learn

Discovering, understanding and sharing knowledge isn't just for the classroom. It is vital to the work of conservationists, caretakers and keepers, as well as academics. Without continually inspiring and informing the next generation, conservation would stall. This is why we take our educational responsibilities seriously, and why we keep it naturally playful - that being the most effective way to learn.

“Play is the highest form of research.”

Ecological learning
in a natural setting

Within its beautiful forest landscape, Birdworld is an ideal place for learning outside the classroom. The interactive exhibits and surrounding gardens offer multiple opportunities and avenues for learning. With many of our species classified as ‘Endangered’ or ‘Critically Endangered’ the Park is more than a refuge for the 1,200 birds in our care. It’s the perfect place to learn all about the threats they face in the wild, and what we can do at home to help them.

Self-guided visits with more to learn around each corner

Birdworld outdoors

Birdworld is a compact, outdoors site with covered viewing areas and interactive indoor spaces.

Park

With no set route around the Park, you can plan your visit to suit the aims and topics of your class curriculum.

Children

Each walk-through area offers a truly immersive experience. Children love using all their senses to make up-close observations of the birds’ varied anatomies and natural behaviours.

Wildlife Garden

In the Wildlife Garden, you can find out all about species that are native to the UK. There are plenty of hands-on learning points, an outdoor classroom and take-away tips to help wildlife thrive at home.

educational presentations

At set times through the day, engaging and educational presentations run. They are open to the public for your group to join, too.

play areas

You’ll also find play areas at convenient points for break times and letting off steam after lunch, as well as landscaped gardens and lawns.

4 steps to making your trip a success

1

An initial visit from lead teachers will enable you to write risk assessments and plan your walking routes - plus those all-important toilet stops.

2

You will be outside for most of your visit, so bring wellies and waterproofs for class puddle splashing and sun protection on hotter days.

3

Each child will need to bring a small rucksack to carry their lunch, as we have no suitable facilities to hold on to multiple picnic packs.

4

Remind the children that even though they may get within touching distance, the birds are not to be petted or fed. Beaks and talons can be just as painful to us as digesting human food is for birds.

Home Educators

Home Educators

Birdworld is a rich resource for home education and independent learning. Being self-guided and without a set route, you can plan to cover multiple topics inone day, or a series of outings across the seasons. Supported home education visits are available Monday to Friday during Hampshire school term-times. Proof of status required.
