This year, Birdworld were very proud to host the annual BIAZA Bird Working group conference, the main event of the year for bird keepers and zoos across the UK to come together, connect and show off the work they have done over the year. Birdworld Senior Keepers Evi Konzcol and Ale Oliveto ran workshops on welfare/training and faecal microscopy on both days of the conference, allowing delegates to learn vital health and welfare techniques for their collections. Evi Konczol also presented a talk on Record Keeping of Behaviour Management, helping other zoos get up to standard on what they need to do for this side of animal management.

There are only so many timeslots for talks and workshops, so we decided to create poster presentations to showcase the work Birdworld has been doing. Both keepers and conservation education staff put together poster on a variety of subjects. The breeding of multiple species was showcased, including the critically endangered Mitchell’s Lorikeet, Citron-crested cockatoo, the near threatened Inca tern and least concern Eastern White Pelicans challenges involved with some individual chicks (Humboldt Penguin and Sumatran Laughingthrush). We’ve also highlighted the success we’ve had with our new pair of Southern Ground Hornbills and showcased the work of the Cornwall Stork Project, a rewilding project Birdworld is supporting. We also shared our conservation-education focused work on site and presented our bird-themed dinosaur trail and some conservation studies the team have been working on, such as native reptile conservation on site.

We’re so excited to share the work we’ve been doing as there is so much behind the scenes work we haven’t talked about before.
