Welcome to Penguin Antics!

Penguins 3Get to know our two very different species of penguins as they dive for fish, play on the rocks and explore their natural habitat enclosures at the park. See if you can spot our Dirty Dozen playful penguins.. Six happy Humboldt’s.. Six affable African.. Twelve very funny characters!!

Humboldt penguins are only found along the Pacific coast of South America, from Isla Foca off the coast of Peru, down to Algarrobo in Chile, with additional isolated colonies further to the south on the Punihuil Islands. The total world population of Humboldt penguins currently stands at around 12,000 breeding pairs, with about 8,000 pairs in Chile and the remaining 4,000 pairs in Peru. The population is currently undergoing a serious decline, and the major causes are thought to be over-fishing of prey species, entanglement in fishing nets and commercial guano removal.

Kiki

The Love struck
Wing-tag:
Wing band Z0823

africantitle

The African Penguin is the only penguin species that breeds in Africa, and it is found nowhere else. Given an annual rate of decline of about 2% per year, there is considerable concern about the long-term viability of African Penguins in the wild. The reasons for the significant decline in the African Penguin populations are the exploitation of penguin eggs for food, habitat alteration and disturbance associated with guano collection at breeding colonies, competition with commercial fisheries for pelagic fish prey and oil pollution.

Name:
Nelson
Nickname:
The Leader
Wing-tag:
Wing Band Z0329
Hatched 29 June 2001 at Living Coasts, Torquay, Nelson is actually a female but she was definitely the leader when she first came to Penguin Beach and inherited the name from Robben Island’s most famous resident. She still tends to lead the colony, but quietly and without making a fuss. Hobbies-wise Nelson enjoys waddling.

The shy one
Wing-tag:
Wing band W1829

Name:
Jimmy Won-One
Nickname:
Rather a cheeky fellow
Wing-tag:
Wing band Z0819
Hatched 4/06/10 at Living Coast Torquay, Jimmy Won-One came across his name seemingly by chance. Since moving to Birdworld, Jimmy has enjoyed meeting the ladies who came from Devon but it has to be said, he does have rather a roving eye!
